Isolation Apertures / Shallow Depth of Field
Using wide apertures creates a shallow depth of field and allows the photographer to draw the viewers eye toward the subject. When using wide apertures with this intention, the goal is to separate, or isolate, the foreground subject from the background by ensuring the subject is sharply in focus while the background is soft and smooth from being out of focus.
